What is a Gratitude Journal?
A gratitude journal is where you write a list of blessings each day. A Christian gratitude journal focuses not only on blessings but also on growing in faith and understanding of God’s Word.
Do Problems Overwhelm You?
Are you a Christian who has the joy of Jesus in your heart, but you find yourself pulled down by the burdens and stresses of life?
Do you want to find peace but worry and anxiety overwhelm you?
Do you battle with depression, anxiety, or nagging worry?
If so, you aren’t alone.
I invite you to join me for a month of focusing on gratitude.
By taking your eyes off what is wrong and focusing on what is right, you’ll be amazed at how this small shift in focus can change your mood, choices, and relationships.
Why Practice Gratitude? {Benefits of a Gratitude Practice}
Why practice gratitude? Gratitude shifts your focus away from your problems and onto all the good gifts God has given you.
A gratitude practice has also been proven to have the following benefits.
1. Grow Your Faith.
As a follower of Jesus, you know that practicing gratitude isn’t about thanking some unseen force for the good things you have in life. Instead, you express deep gratitude and awe to God for the good gifts and blessings He gives you.
In our sinful condition, we deserve nothing, yet God continues to bless you with His grace and favor not because of who you are but because of who He is. The more you reflect on His blessings, the more thankful you are, which makes your faith deeper and stronger.
2. Increase Your Joy.
Research proves that people who regularly practice gratitude are happier in the short term and the long term. As you focus on God and read his words in Scripture, you will develop a joyful heart and grow in the fruits of the spirit, such as peace, patience, kindness, and goodness.
3. Improve Your Physical Health.
Research has shown that people who practice gratitude have a boosted immune system, are sick less often, and are more likely to engage in physical activity. God designed your body to run well on gratitude!
4. Refresh Your Mental Health.
Regular gratitude practice can improve your mood and decrease worry and stress. No, a gratitude practice doesn’t fix all your problems, but it does renew your appreciation for the good things you do have.
This isn’t to discount the fundamental issues of depression and anxiety that many people face. Still, for those of us who struggle with these mental health issues, a gratitude practice is one way to regulate mood and manage difficult emotions.
5. Grow in Confidence.
People who regularly practice gratitude tend to have more confidence and a higher sense of confidence and self-worth. They see the good in life, including in themselves.
How to Create a Daily Gratitude Habit
Our 30-day journal will guide you through exactly how to create a realistic, easy-to-use daily gratitude habit.
Many people choose to start their day with a morning gratitude practice, but anytime that you can commit to doing consistently works best. I am a morning person, so every morning when I wake up, I have quiet devotion time (which includes a gratitude list), then exercise time, and then I begin my busy day.
I recommend setting aside 20 minutes to read the Bible and reflect on gratitude, but if you can only give ten or even 5 minutes, that works too. Consistency is much more important than doing it perfectly.
Remember, if you miss a day, just jump back in and start again. Don’t worry about catching up or getting it exactly right. Start where you are and do something.
We’ve given you 30 daily journaling pages (in 4 beautiful autumn designs). Here’s what your daily gratitude practice includes:
- Write a list of 5 things you are grateful for. Each day this month, write 5 things you are thankful for. Maybe your list repeats some items or maybe you challenge yourself to write five new things each day. Include big things like friends, family, and salvation, and also consider small things too, like your favorite coffee mug or a phone call from a friend. (Feeling stuck? We included a list of 75 blessings to be grateful for, which gives you tons of ideas.)
- Write a Bible verse. We’ve included 30 Bible verses for you, or feel free to choose one. Write the verse in your handwriting or write reflections after you read it.
- Write a joyful memory. Choose a fun memory from the day or years ago, like a favorite holiday or vacation memory.
- Complete a small act of gratitude and write a journal about it. This month, we challenge you to do small acts of gratitude, like doing a chore for a loved one without being asked or paying for the coffee for the stranger in front of you. We’ve given you a list of 35 small acts of gratitude, so you’ll have plenty of ideas.
- Pray. Thank God for his many blessings. Pray in your heart, out loud, or write your prayer, whatever comes most naturally to you.
