Weight loss rewards work best when they celebrate how far you’ve come without sending you back to food. Good non-food rewards are things you’ll use, enjoy, or give away, like new walking shoes, a day trip, or a food bank donation equal to the pounds you’ve lost. That last one is our favorite at The Holy Weigh, and I’ll tell you why.
I’ve kept off a 100+ pound weight loss for more than 20 years. For most of my life, food was my reward for everything: a hard day, a good day, a good number on the scale. If you count WW points, you’ve probably “saved up” for a treat after weigh-in, too. Changing how you celebrate is one of the most freeing habits you can build.

Why Shouldn’t Weight Loss Rewards Be Food?
You aren’t a puppy. You don’t need a treat for good behavior. When food is the reward, every milestone pulls you back toward the habit you’re working to break. Inside The Holy Weigh, we talk a lot about the heart side of eating, using food to soothe or celebrate. Non-food rewards teach your brain that good days don’t have to end in the pantry.

What Is the Donate Your Weight Reward?
Inside The Holy Weigh, we have a tradition called Donate Your Weight. For every pound you lose, you donate one pound of food to a local food bank or ministry. It’s built into every phase of the program.
Here’s why it matters to me. I spent so many years abusing food, and now I am intentionally using food in a healthy, healing way.
You might be tempted to send a check or cash donation. Don’t. Physically doing this is part of your healing process. (Or if you’re like me, drive around with it in the back of your car for a few weeks first.)

As of October 2026, Holy Weigh members have donated 1,586.2 pounds of food to local food banks and missions. You can see the latest numbers on our Victory Wall.
How Do You Donate Your Weight?
- Check your progress. Note how many pounds you’ve lost since you started or since your last donation.
- Gather that many pounds of food. Add up the weights on the labels. Canned goods, peanut butter, pasta, rice, and cereal add up fast.
- Drop it off yourself. Take it to a local food bank, church pantry, or mission. Call ahead to ask what they need most.
- Pray for the people who will receive it.
- Take a photo. Our members share theirs in our private community, and every one of them makes my day.
“Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will repay him for his deed.” Proverbs 19:17 (ESV)
Can You Donate Your Weight If You Didn’t Lose Weight?
Yes. If you maintained your weight or even gained a little, you can still donate. What’s important is that you’ve kept going.
How Can a Church or Group Do a Weight Loss Challenge With Food Donations?
This works well as a church, small group, or workplace weight loss challenge, especially before Thanksgiving:
- Pick a start date and an end date.
- Have everyone weigh in privately and report only pounds lost.
- Add up the group’s total pounds.
- Donate that many pounds of food together.
- Celebrate with a non-food party, like a walk, a game night, or a service project.
