Recently I was discussing different Bible journaling styles with a fellow Bible journaler. I mentioned that tip-ins must be my thing because all my pages seem to have some type of tip-in. She asked me, “What’s a tip-in?” I will tell you what I told her. If you have ever wished for more space, wanted to cover a mistake, or needed to add something not in the Bible then tip-ins are a must for you. Tip-ins are a fun and inexpensive way to add so much to your Bible journaling. Read on to find out all you need to know about Bible journaling with tip-ins.
What is a tip-in?
A tip-in is a fancy term for any paper that you add to your Bible. It is usually attached on only one side leaving the paper free to be lifted up and reveal the scripture underneath. They have so many uses that every Bible journaler can find some way to make tip-ins useful. All you need is something to stick down and something to stick with and you have yourself a tip-in. I have used paper, vellum, fabric, glue, tape and washi so really the sky is the limit.
Why Do I Need Tip-Ins?
I have not run out of reasons to use tip-ins. Here are some of my favorite:
- Oops. You need help covering a mistake
- Hum. Your creativity runith over and you need more room
- Shucks. You already journaled that page, but you just discovered your new favorite verse.
- Wow! You just discovered something too awesome not to be in your Bible.
- Sshhh. You want to keep something private.
I Want One! What Do I Need?
As I said before, tip-ins only require two things: something to stick down and something to stick with. Here are just a few options for each.
Something to stick down
- scrapbook paper
- printer paper
- wrapping paper
- tracing paper
- vellum
Something to stick with
How Can I Make My Own Tip-Ins?
Once you have gathered your supplies, making your own tip-ins is easy. Simply place your tape half on your paper (with half hanging off) and press onto your Bible page. It really is that easy. Little tip: if you are worried about covering up words use clear scotch tape.

Fun for crafting but I never want to cover up Gods Holy Word! I have a NOTEBOOK that I use for journaling, crafting, etc, like this but many of the drawings cover Gods Word- how do you read it again later with the visual distraction?
Just me.
I DO write in the margins of my Bible.

Thanks for commenting Libby. I find with clever placement you can use tip-ins and not cover up the scripture permanently. I have a video that explains how to do this featured in the Flourish Bible Journaling Conference. Also, in answer to your question: I have a separate Bible that I use for reading and study. My journaling Bible is more a canvas to highlight specific verses.
