When you have a goal of weight loss, it’s helpful to know how many calories you burn during certain activities. Use our free calorie burn calculator to find out how many calories you are burn.
Why It’s Helpful to Understand Calorie Burn for Weight Loss
While weight loss can at times seem complex, the truth is that on a basic level it’s actually quite simple.
Burn more calories than you eat and you will lose weight.
One pound of body fat equals approximately 3,500 calories, so when you burn an additional 3,500 calories more than the food you take in, you will lose one pound of fat.
In real life, we know that weight loss is more complex and there are a variety of factors that affect body weight. As someone who is maintaining a 100 pound weight loss, I understand the challenges.
A calculator that shows how many calories you burn is helpful because you can find ways to add extra movement or activity into your day.
What Burns the Most Calories?
While it’s true that activities like running burn a high amount of calories, the reality (and perhaps irony) is the activity that will always burn the most calories is all your body does to keep you alive.
That’s right – simply staying alive burns the most calories, around 1,000-1,400 per day for most people. Unless you are running marathons, you won’t burn that many with activity.
This is why it’s critical to get a handle on your diet. Diet plays a far greater roll in weight loss than any type of physical activity.
Should You Exercise to Lose Weight?
People are sometimes shocked when I tell them you don’t have to exercise to lose weight, but it’s true. You can cut back on calories with diet alone and lose weight.
In fact, managing your diet is far more important to weight loss than any exercise routine.
Still, there are many benefits to exercise that go beyond calorie burn. The health improvements to your heart, lungs, muscles, even your skin are great when you exercise regularly.
When you exercise on a regular basis you will look better, feel better, and live longer. There’s no pill that comes close to giving the benefits you receive from exercise.
Plus the additional calories you burn will benefit you, especially if you are losing weight slowly or are on a plateau.
What’s the Best Exercise for Weight Loss?
Quite simply, the best exercise for weight loss is the one you will do. Any type of movement is helpful.
Incorporating more movement into your daily life is a great place to begin. Add extra steps to your day with getting up for walk greats, parking farther away, or investing in a fitness tracker like a FitBit to track your steps.
Walking is a great exercise for weight loss for most people. It’s easy, you don’t need special equipment, and it’s free.
