When Weight Loss is a Struggle
For most of my life, I was overweight. I was heavier than healthy when I was 3 years old.
I lost weight….lots of times…only to gain it all back and then some.
Finally, in 2004, I began losing weight for the final time.
Since then, I’ve kept off the lost weight and changed my whole life, going from total couch potato to triathlete and Tae Kwon Do black belt.
I’ve done it, and you can do it, too.
How to Lose Weight and Keep It Off
Weight loss isn’t easy, but it is also complicated. The key is to eat fewer calories than you burn.
The challenge is how to make that happen in today’s crazy world. If you are like me, you’ve read books, joined the programs, and eaten salads without dressing.
Do you wonder what separates you from successful people who lose weight and keep it off?
I wondered that, too.
Inside 101 Breakthrough Tips to Maximize Your Weight Loss Success, I guide you through the foundational principles of weight loss and teach you how to apply them in a way that fits into your busy life.
These tips made all the difference for me and will for you.
You’ll learn the best foods because they won’t leave you hungry. Find out the recipes I come back to again and again because they taste so good. (These are recipes my family loves, too, and doesn’t even know are healthy!)
You’ll discover how to incorporate fitness into your life without feeling like crying in the corner in frustration.
Most of all, I share the mindset strategies that enabled me to not only lose weight but also keep it off.

10 Helpful Weight Loss Tips {Bonus Section!}
Here’s a sneak peek at just a few weight loss tips in the book, to give you an idea of what they are like.
- #7 – You can’t outrun your fork. Don’t count on exercise to burn a ton of extra calories you can eat. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I can always eat more than what I burn, even during my crazy-intense triathlon training days. Exercise is important to health for all sorts of reasons, but it has less to do with calorie expenditure and more to do with overall wellness mindset.
- #13 – Fruit is your friend. I once had someone tell me eating a banana is like eating a Twinkie because they both have a similar amount of carbs. I’m not buying it. Fruit is full of nutrition, fiber, and more. For most of us, fruit is not the reason we are overweight, and more recent research proves this. Include several servings of fruit into your diet each day.
- #18 – Eat to gentle fullness, not stuffed. For years, I didn’t understand my body’s fullness signals. I thought full meant eating too stuffed. I’ve learned to tune in during meals. (I used to tune out during eating, which meant eating in front of the TV or while scrolling through my phone) Now, I slow down to pay attention when I get full.
- #27 – Freezer cooking. Cooking for the freezer means cooking several weeks or up to a month’s worth of main dish meals at once. If you have a family or are busy, I encourage you to give this a try. Having meals in my freezer greatly reduces my tendency to pick up fast food, go out to eat, or pick up convenience foods at the grocery store, all of which are higher in calories. Check out Once a Month Meals for more help with freezer cooking.
- #30 – Don’t drink calories. Research shows that drinking calories does not lead to the same type of satiation as eating food with the same number of calories. Set a goal for yourself not to drink any calories, including smoothies and coffee creamer.
- #33 – Pumpkin Fluff. I make this recipe every year on Thanksgiving, and my family loves it. They don’t even realize it’s a Weight Watchers recipe.
- #37 – Take a maintenance break. As you proceed through your weight loss journey, I encourage you to take maintenance breaks. These are times when you intentionally focus on not losing or gaining weight. I know you might be wondering why on earth you would want to take a break from weight loss, but the truth is that you might mentally need the break. Your body needs a chance to recover because dieting is a physical stress. Plus, you’ll be maintaining for the rest of your life, so this is great opportunity to start working on those skills.
- #85—Brain Over Binge by Katharine Hansen. If you struggle with binge eating, like I did, Katharine’s podcast and books are my top recommendations.
- #89 – Weight Loss Podcasts. I’ve become a podcast junkie, listing to all types of podcasts while out for walks, runs, even while driving in my car. Here’s a list of some of my favorites.
- #99—Calorie Calculator. Are you wondering how many calories you should eat each day to lose weight? While no online calculator is 100% accurate since your body is unique, this will give you a helpful starting point.
