Why Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?

St. Patrick’s day is especially meaningful to people of Irish culture.

Here are a few of the ways St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated:

  • Wearing green. (Tradition is that you deserve a pinch if you don’t wear green on St. Patrick’s day.)
  • Decorations with shamrocks.
  • Parades.
  • Drinking beer, especially beer that is tinted green.
  • Eating Corned Beef and Cabbage, Irish Soda Bread, or Irish stew.

Who Was Saint Patrick?

St. Patrick is a patron saint of Ireland. It is traditionally believed that he died on March 17 around the year 493. Born in Roman Britain, he was captured by Irish raiders and served as a slave. Many years later, he returned to his home country and joined the church.

In adulthood, St. Patrick returned to Ireland as a missionary.

Traditional Irish Blessings

Here are three traditional Irish blessings.

May Your Troubles Be Less

May your troubles be less

And your blessings be more.

And nothing but happiness

Come through your door.

May The Road Rise Up To Meet You

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields
and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

St. Patrick’s Breastplate Prayer

Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.
