Are you looking for a list of things to declutter while stuck at home or just in the mood to throw things out? Clearing out the clutter feels amazing, doesn’t it? Research shows that this is true. Decluttering leads to feeling more energetic and reduces frustration and stress.
Why Should You Declutter Your Home?
Clutter Free Now says this,
“Having a lot of stuff in your home can take a toll on your mind. You may not be conscious of it all the time, but the more we own the more we have to maintain. Things break and need repairs, things get dusty and need cleaning, and very simply, things need a place to live in your home. It’s a lot for your mind to keep track of!
As you sit down in a room that feels disorganized or cluttered, your mind is probably at work in the background, taking inventory of the things that need fixing or cleaning. Even if it’s subconscious, it’s a lot of mental work.
This explains why trying to relax in a cluttered space can make you feel restless. Even if you have a glass of wine and a book to read, your mind gets distracted by your to-do list!
When you declutter and let go of that which no longer serves you, it takes a load of responsibility off your mind. The less you have, the less there is to take care of.
As you look around a decluttered room, your mind won’t have work to do; instead, it can feel at ease. This helps make your home a place of true relaxation and calm.

I encourage you to try setting a timer for 15 minutes a day and spend that time decluttering one small area of your home, like a kitchen drawer or a bathroom cabinet. It’s amazing how much you will get done in such a seemingly short time, and that great feeling will motivate you to work on another area the next day, until you’ve gone through much of your house.

Do Overweight People Have More Clutter?
Another fascinating concept is the link between clutter and weight gain. This is something I am still learning about but as someone who is maintaining a 100 pound weight loss, I find this fascinating.
Many people who have trouble with clutter also struggle with their weight. I believe this link between clutter and weight has to do with feelings over overwhelm and lack of organization.
Trying making a commitment to either declutter or lose weight. Attempting too much at once is overwhelming and you’ll accomplish nothing. Then, once you’ve made a bit of traction in one area, you can tackle the other. I think you’ll be amazed to discover that getting one area under control (your food or your clutter) you will feel better and find the motivation to work on the other.

Why Does It Feel Good To Throw Things Out?
Why does it feel so good to be able to check off your things to declutter list?
According to Apartment Therapy, “Physical space and mental space go hand-in-hand. Clutter is visual noise, and the disarray creeps into our mental faculties as well (for some of us more than others). So it stands to reason that clearing out our physical spaces, making room for air and light and growth, would be mirrored in our psyches as well. Just think how much better you work when your desk is cleaned off — now extend that to your life.”
