What Does the Bible Say About Healing & Pain?
During our human lifetime, we experience incredibly hurts:
- Grief from loss of a loved one to death
- Heartache from broken relationships
- Abuse and injustice
- Physical pain from injury, illness, childbirth, surgery, or chronic conditions
- Emotional pain and hurt feelings
- Watching a loved one hurting
- Loneliness
- Depression and sadness
- Anger and resentments we struggle to let go of
You have probably had times when you felt like hurt would overwhelm you. Have you gone through times when you were so despondent that you could barely function? I have.
During those moments, it’s hard to rely on God. Everything looks bleak.
You may cry out to God and ask why. You may wonder how a loving God can allow such bad things to happen.
During situations of testing, I trust that God has a plan for my greater good. I often don’t feel it, but I trust it because God has promised it. I choose to have faith, even when it’s not reflected in my current circumstances.
Top 3 Promises from the Bible for Sadness & Pain
During your times of sickness, pain, or hurt, trust in these promises of God.
1. The pain you’re feeling can’t compare to the joy that’s coming.
Romans 8:18 says, “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”
You live in a world that is broken by sin, but someday you will be in heaven, where there is no more pain and no more suffering (Revelation 21:4). You will see God’s glory and the pain you are going through now will be small compared to that incredible joy.
2. Your pain won’t last forever.
Allow the words of Psalm 30 to soak into your soul,
For his anger is but for a moment,
Psalm 30:5
and his favor is for a lifetime.
Weeping may tarry for the night,
but joy comes with the morning.
If you are going through a difficult time, remember that joy will come again. Cling to the other promise in this passage, too – God’s favor lasts a lifetime.
3. God has a purpose for your pain.
Romans 8:28 tells us, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”
In 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 it says, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”
God’s ways are higher than our ways. You may not understand why God has given you the challenges that you currently face, but you can trust that God has a greater good in mind.
Your test becomes your testimony. Your mess becomes your message. Not only does God have your greater good in mind, but He will even use you to bless and comfort others.
