What is a Stronghold in Scripture?
A stronghold is a fort. The Greek word for stronghold, “ochyrōma” means a fortified place, and it’s used in Scripture in both positive and negative ways.
Strongholds are used for protection. You might have used a substance (for me, that’s food), a behavior, or an unhealthy habit at one time to help you ease stress or fear, and you were doing the best you could at the time, but now it’s become a prison that keeps you trapped.
Psalm 18:1 says, “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
As we study together, pay attention to the places where food is a stronghold for you, and you’ll discover how to rely on God as your source of strength.
What is Breakthrough in the Bible?
In the Bible, a breakthrough is when God’s power bursts through an obstacle and brings victory. The Hebrew word for breakthrough is “perets” meaning “a sudden burst forward.” (See 2 Samuel 5:20 as an example.)
You may be seeking:
- financial breakthrough
- employment breakthrough
- deliverance from a problem
- marriage breakthrough
- freedom from addictions and harmful habits
No matter the type of breakthrough you desire, God’s Word provides hope.

How Can I Get a Breakthrough in My Life?
Breakthrough can take many forms, including freedom from an addiction, peace in a troubled marriage, a shift in your mental or emotional health, or finally losing weight after years of trying.
You might be praying for a financial breakthrough, healing in your body, or the strength to overcome emotional eating. Whatever your situation, please be encouraged that a breakthrough is possible with God.
One powerful way to seek a breakthrough is through fasting and prayer. As someone with food issues, I am careful about fasting from food, but there are many forms of fasting.
In the Bible, fasting often preceded God’s big moves. It’s not about earning God’s favor but about quieting distractions and focusing your heart on Him.
Sometimes, breakthroughs don’t come in a single moment but over time. It’s helpful to look back on past breakthroughs – moments when God made a way, carried you through, or gave clarity when things felt dark. Remembering those victories builds your faith for what He will do next. This is what I call a slow miracle.
If you feel stuck right now, you’re not alone. Many women in The Holy Mess community have shared how they were at a breaking point and felt like they had tried everything.
This is often where breakthrough begins. Don’t give up.
Keep praying, reading God’s Word, and surrendering to Him. God is already working behind the scenes, and your breakthrough may be closer than you think.
