What are Christian Affirmations?
Should Christians use positive affirmations?
Affirmations are positive statements we say to ourselves (written or spoken) while reaching toward a goal.
Daily affirmations are especially helpful to change negative thinking patterns.
The Bible tells us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. (See Romans 12:1-2.) Affirmations give you a framework for taking your thoughts captive to obey Christ.
How Affirmations Work
All of us have negative thinking patterns that we repeat to ourselves on a regular basis. These can be words that were spoken to us as children (and we’ve internalized and now say in our own voice) or thoughts we’ve come to believe because of past mistakes.
We also have an enemy, Satan, who wants us to stay stuck in negative thinking patterns, so he is crafty in the ways he lures us into negatively and doubt.
Biblical affirmations are not just feel-good statements. Instead, the goal is to replace the lies of the enemy with the truth from God’s Word.
How to Write Affirmations
Affirmations are especially powerful when you take a negative thought you tend to repeat and reframe it in the positive.
For example, imagine you often say to yourself, “I’m no good. I never get anything right.” Replace it with, “God created me in His image,” or “I am a beautiful daughter of the King.”
Always frame affirmations in the positive and in the present tense.
Instead of the affirmation, “I don’t overeat,” try instead, “I am a person who stops eating when full,” or “I eat until satisfied.”
Use affirmations that are present tense (“I do ____” not “I will do _____”) because the goal is to change your behavior starting immediately, not someday.
Weight Loss Affirmations
Here are some weight loss affirmations I’ve used during my 100 pound weight loss journey.
- I am disciplined. Christ in me is more powerful than the wrong desires in me.
- Overeating is not fun.
- I do not compare myself to other women. God made each of us beautifully unique.
- Thin is safe.
- I learn how to do new things.
- My body wants to be at my goal weight.
- Because of Jesus, I have everything I need.
Affirmations Require Repetition
Use affirmations on a daily basis in order to replace old, unhealthy thinking patterns with new thoughts grounded in the truth of Scripture.
If you have negative thoughts you’ve said to yourself for many years (or even decades!) you might have said these phrases to yourself hundreds or thousands of times. It stands to reason that it will take repetition in order for new thoughts to become a habit.
Remember that this isn’t just a feel good activity, Instead, this is intentional work to take your thoughts captive to obey Christ.
How to Use our Christian Weight Loss Affirmations Tracker
We’ve designed this weight loss affirmation tracker to make the work easy for you. (Plus, it’s beautiful and fun so you will be motivated to do it!) See the tutorial video for a walk-through of how I use the Biblical affirmation tracker.
I recommend setting a specific time each day that you will write or speak your daily affirmations. I find mornings to be my best time, so each morning I sit down (hot tea or coffee in hand) to read a passage of scripture, write a short gratitude list, and write or say aloud 4-5 affirmations.
Each time you write or speak an affirmation, color in the circle in the tracker.
We’ve also given you printable note cards to cut apart and put up where you will see them often. Many women in our Faithful Finish Lines 2.0 Membership find that putting cards on their mirror, in their car, or on their refrigerator give them powerful reminders to reframe their thinking.
