Do you want to lose weight and want God’s help for the process, but you aren’t exactly sure how to pray for weight loss? Many Christians believe in the power of prayer but aren’t exactly sure how to ask for God’s help when it comes to this practical life situation. As someone who is maintaining a 100 pound weight loss and prayed throughout the process (and still prays daily for it!), in this post I’ll walk you through the steps to take. How to Pray for Your Weight Loss Journey

Does God Care What You Weigh?

Does God care what you weigh? Yes…and no.

God loves you absolutely and totally, and God sees you for the person you are. 1 Samuel 16:7 says, “For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”

Yet we also know that overeating is a sin. While that’s not fun to think about and perhaps isn’t a popular thought in our culture of super-sized portion sizes and whole TV channels dedicated to food, the truth is that the Bible speaks clearly that gluttony is sinful behavior.

Thank God that because of Jesus we are forgiven from this and any other sinful behaviors because of God’s grace, mercy, and forgiveness.

Ask for God’s Help in Your Weight Loss Journey

Many Christians are open to the idea of asking for God’s help in order to lose weight, but they’ve just honestly never thought of it before. It can seem a bit strange to pray about lettuce instead of cookies.

Isn’t this too trivial for God? No.

God cares about every aspect of your life.

You aren’t bothering God or somehow taking up too much of His time by asking for something that might seem trivial. God is ALL-powerful and ALL-knowing. That means He has a limitless amount of time and energy to listen to your prayers.

God also cares deeply about this issue because weight loss is so much more than a physical issue, isn’t it? It’s a heart-issue, and God cares very much about your heart, your mind, and your spirit.

3 Steps to Take to Pray for Weight Loss

You want to pray about your weight, but how exactly do you go about it? These are the steps I recommend.

  1. Pray with confidence (1 John 5:14). First John tells us that we are to approach God’s throne with confidence. That means be bold! Ask God for what you want. Pour out your heart and ask for His healing in this area of your life. Pray for big things (getting to your goal weight, overcoming emotional eating) and small things (making a healthy choice for lunch, skipping the doughnuts in the break room), too.
  2. Pray with Scripture (Hebrews 4:16). The Bible tells us that God’s word does not return void. That means that anytime God’s word from the Bible is read or spoken, there is real, active power at work. It’s not just words on a page. I’m a huge believer in the importance of using scripture for weight loss. Start with these 20 Bible verses for weight loss and these 7 Christian weight loss affirmations, which each have Bible verses and also come with printable note cards. (See below for videos of these.)
  3. Pray with consistency. (Luke 18:1-8). Many of us have been overweight for many years and stuck in unhealthy eating patterns for decades. Yet once we decide we want to lose weight, we expect the weight to be gone suddenly, next week, or next month. This is magical thinking and it’s not realistic. Plan to incorporate prayers for weight loss into your daily routine. Be in this for the long haul instead of a quick fix.
