1. Ninja Creami Vanilla (Base) Protein Recipe
This is my standard, go-to Ninja Creami recipe. After testing a LOT of recipes (and getting some real duds), this one works for me every single time. I use it as a base to make a huge combination of flavors, and it’s the perfect consistency for mix-ins, too.
The Holy Mess Ninja Creami Vanilla Protein Ice Cream Recipe
Equipment
- Ninja Creami
- blender or whisk
Ingredients
- 1 scoop protein powder vanilla
- 1/4 cup cottage cheese fat free or low fat
- 2 T sweetener powdered, or sugar (adjust calories/points)
- 1 T vanilla pudding mix powder vanilla, sugar free (or regular and adjust calories/points)
- 2 cups almond milk regular or vanilla, unsweetened
- 1/4 tsp guar gum optional, but it helps with creaminess and makes it less icy
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract optional
Instructions
- Mix all ingredients in a bowl with a wire wisk, with an immersion blender, or in a blender. (I use a hand-held a blender, similar to a Magic Bullet.)
- Once blended, pour the mixture into an empty CREAMi™ pint. Place storage lid on pint and freeze for 24 hours.
- Remove pint from freezer and remove lid from pint. Place pint in outer bowl, install Creamerizer™ Paddle onto outer bowl lid, and lock the lid assembly on the outer bowl. Place bowl assembly on motor base and twist the handle right to raise the platform and lock in place.
- Select "light ice cream" setting and allow ice cream to process.
- Remove container from machine, open the lid and stir. If the sides are icy, scrape them down. Process again on "light ice cream" setting.
- Remove container from machine and open lid. If adding any mix-ins, make a well in the center of the ice cream. Add mix-ins and process with "mix in" function, then serve.

Watch Me Make Healthier Protein Ice Cream!
Which Ninja Creami Machine to Buy + Additional Items You Will Need
Here are the items you must have that are helpful but not required.
Must-Have Items to make Ninja Creami frozen treats
1. Ninja Creami Machine
I have a Ninja Creami NC301.
I think the models 299, 300, and 301 are all great. You can get fancier models, but I don’t think they are necessary. I recommend getting the basic size, not the Deluxe (which takes larger containers).
2. Extra Containers
Most machines come with at least two containers but trust me you’ll want extra.
We have these additional pint containers from Denebore. They are great – in fact, we like them better than the containers that came with the Creami machine because the lids fit better.
3. Ice Cream Ingredients
You’ll need something to make ice cream. You can go basic here or stock up on lots of flavorings and mix-ins. The sky is the limit with the flavor combos you can create.
Optional But Helpful Items for Your Creami
Here are some items that aren’t required but come in handy.
1. Freezer Labels
Freezer labels like these Labelebal food labels are handy to mark the flavor and ingredients of your creations.
2. Additional Ingredients
Here are some of the ingredients I’ve found make our ice cream good:
- Protein powder – I’ve used several protein powders, which have worked. I like Jock Molk and PE Science. Clean Simple Eats is a popular brand with many people who make Creami recipes. I have not tried vegan protein powders in Creami recipes, but they tend to be a bit grittier and may not taste as good. I have found that powders seem to work better than protein drinks.
- Guar gum – Guar gum is a natural product from a tree and is a thickening agent. While optional, it does help your ice cream to be more creamy, especially if you are using lower fat products.
- Pudding mix – While not required, these mixes are an easy way to add flavor and creaminess. You can use Jello brand, store brands, or try Simply Delish for a brand with a little bit more “clean” ingredients.
- Mix-ins – Sprinkles, candy, cookies, brownies, graham crackers and more. This is where your ice cream comes to life (and also where weight loss dreams go to die if you aren’t careful.)
- Extracts and flavorings – A few drops of extracts like vanilla, butter, coconut, orange, or mint can give your Creami a whole new flavor. I ordered these LorAnn flavorings, but our family has given them mixed reviews. They have a bit of an artificial taste, and sometimes, you can taste an extract-type aftertaste if you use too much. (Start with 2-4 drops per pint.)
Tips and Tricks for Making Protein Ice Cream
Here are some hacks we have discovered since using our Creami machine.
- If your ice cream freezes with a lump in the middle, scrape it smooth with a knife or spoon before putting it in the machine. If the surface of your frozen ice cream is too uneven, it can break the machine.
- Before freezing your mixture, be sure to give it a taste test. It should taste almost too sweet. Then you know it will be just right as ice cream. The cold temperature somewhat dulls your taste buds.
- If you spin your ice cream once or twice and it’s still too hard or powdery, add a splash of liquid, but not too much. One or two tablespoons is usually enough. Add too much, and your ice cream will become a milkshake.
- Leftovers? Level the top before refreezing. The mixture will become hard and need to be re-spun before you eat it again.
Our family is having much fun with our Ninja Creami, and I’m so glad we bought it!

I have a cuisinart ice cream maker from william Sonoma. Can I use that?
Sara says
Good question, Joanne. My guess is that these recipes will not work in a traditional ice cream machine because the technology is quite different, although I haven’t tried it.
