Bible journaling is an important way that I spend time daily with the Lord. But like many people, I’m on a budget. One of the first things I did was scour my house to find supplies I already have on hand. Believe it or not, you can Bible journal and save money, too.

Thinking you need a long list of materials to get started? Think again. All you need is a Bible, a few simple household supplies and a desire to get into the Word. So grab your favorite Bible and let’s get started.
Bible Journaling Hacks: Supplies You Have at Home
Check out these awesome places where you can find supplies right in your own house.
Home Office Bible Journaling Supplies
Your home office is a good place to start. There you can probably find:
Coloring Bible Journaling Supplies
Want to add some color? Have any kids? Then you probably have:
- crayons
- stickers
- coloring books
- paints
Paint Bible Journaling Supplies
Need a paintbrush? Pillage the bathroom! It doesn’t have to have bristles to get paint on a page. Try:
- makeup sponge
- cotton balls
- q-tips
- paper towels
But, wait. Before you leave the bathroom grab that hairdryer.
Bible Journaling Supplies from the Kitchen
Look for sticky notes and scratch paper.
These are great for taking notes and marking off the part of a page that you want to keep clean. (Think multi-functional blue painters tape for your Bible.)
Also snag an empty cereal box.
You see a cereal box, but we see chipboard! Chipboard is great for an added layer between pages. This helps your coloring strokes not show on the next page. (Bible pages are thin.) Cut at least one piece a little bigger than your Bible page.
Bible Journaling Supplies from the Little Places
In the hall closet you’ll probably find wrapping paper and tissue paper. These decorative papers can add easy color to your pages.
And even in your purse that expired gift card. I use this for an easy paint technique.
The One Item I Use Every Day
Your smartphone is an indispensable Bible journaling tool. Think beyond the apps. That camera of yours is an indecisive girl’s best friend. Not sure about color or placement? Just snap a pic of both. Which makes you smile? That’s the right one for you.
Then of course when you are finished you must use that phone to post here in our Bible Journaling Facebook group.

It can get so easy to get caught up in buying all of the “stuff” that we forget the purpose: spending time with God. These are great ideas for a “no excuses, sit down and get to worshipping” journal session! Thanks for the inspiration!

I sadly have that problem too. I’m currently on a supply spending freeze so it’s time to get imaginative.

Jade, this article is so stuffed full of great ideas that it’s about to split down the side! Way to go! I said it before and I’ll say it again: God led Sara to the right person!
I’ve thought of a couple other things a person could do for supplies. When you throw away old makeup, like eye shadow and blush, keep the little brushes. Also, if you’ve ever done scrapbooking or stamping, you probably have a box of things in the bottom of a closet that are perfect for journaling.
Jade, you’re a gem!

Thank you Jeanette! I don’t wear makeup so I never would have thought of that.

Awesome tips Jade, thank you! It can get super expensive even with coupons and sales and the last thing we need at this house is more “stuff”! I love idea of using up what’s here already.

If I had a nickel for every gallon of gas I used to get to the craft store to use a coupon….

Jade, this list is awesome! I hate having to buy a long list of new products when I start a new hobby, so I love knowing how to repurpose things I already have around. Awesome post!

With all the boxes of yarn under my bed from my crochet habit I don’t even know where would I put new supplies?
