As Christians, we recognize the Triune God of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. We understand God the Father as creator and loving Father. We see the work of Jesus the Son as he came to earth to be our Savior. The Holy Spirit is a bit harder for us as humans to grasp. Who is the Holy Spirit, and what is the Holy Spirit doing in your life?
Who is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, fully God with God the Father and Jesus the Son. The work of the Holy Spirit is to comfort and counsel us. Faith happens because of the work of the Holy Spirit.
The work of the Holy Spirit:
- To work salvation – to open your eyes to the reality of your sin and need for a Savior.
- To help you live differently – by growing deeper in your understanding of your sin and your salvation.
What is the Holy Spirit doing in your life?
The Holy Spirit works faith in the heart of the believer. This is a mystery that brings along with it many questions. If the Holy Spirit works faith, why do some people believe and others don’t? Do we play a part by accepting or deciding to live a life for Jesus? Much of the division between Christian churches happens over the answers to these questions.
The Holy Spirit is your comforter. The role of the Holy Spirit is to provide you comfort and peace in times of trouble. The Bible says that when we are too anguished to even pray, the Holy Spirit prays for us. (Romans 8:26-27)
The Holy Spirit is your counselor. Any good counselor provides the careful balance of loving support with honest accountability, and that is the Holy Spirit’s role in your life, too. C.S. Lewis describes a relationship with God as a dance of fellowship. Through the work of the Holy Spirit, you are invited into that eternal dance as well. (Getting to Know Jesus, P. Schult, p.86)
