Key Take-Aways About Who We Are in God
- You are not your weight. God defines your worth, not the number on the scale. The lies you think like “I’m a failure” or “I’ll never lose weight” are not from God.
- God’s truth brings freedom. Use Bible verses to remind you that you are chosen, loved, accepted, and a conqueror. Directly confront diet shame with God’s grace.
- Spiritual breakthrough is the foundation of lasting weight loss. Replacing shame with grace brings emotional healing and lasting change.
The Lies You Might Believe (Especially When It Comes to Your Weight)
When you’re struggling, it’s easy to fall into lies:
- “I’m a failure.”
- “I’m not good enough.”
- “I’ll never be able to lose this weight.”
- “God must be disappointed in me.”
- “There’s something wrong with my body.”
- “I’ll never lose this weight. Why bother trying?”
Those thoughts aren’t from the Lord, and in fact, that is the voice of the enemy. Often we have heard these lies for so long, we start to take them on and say them to ourselves so often that they feel like the truth.
These lies come from shame, and shame will never positively motivate you. Grace motivates. Shame destroys.
12 Important Truths from Scripture About Who God Says You Are
Below are twelve Bible verses that have been instrumental in helping me replace lies with the truth and claim my identity in Christ.
These aren’t just feel-good affirmations. They are promises straight from God’s Word, and they apply to your weight loss journey and every area of your life today.
1. You are chosen – 2 Thessalonians 2:13
“But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.”
2 Thessalonians 2:13
Apply it to your weight loss: Before time began, God chose you as His child. He created you and has a plan for your life. You aren’t too far gone, too messed up, or too hopeless.
You are not behind. Making healthy choices in today’s world is hard. Just because it’s hard doesn’t mean you are doing it wrong. It is hard, but you can do hard things because you have the power of God within you. (Philippians 4:13)

2. You are delighted in – Zephaniah 3:17
“The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.”
—Zephaniah 3:17
Apply it to your weight loss: God is not disgusted by your body, your voice, or your place in this world. He is not regretting His decision to create you. This verse shows just how much God loves you, and even more, He delights in you. Imagine Him singing over you right now.
The next time you feel disgusted, like if you see a photo of yourself and you are heavier than you want to be, or you try on a pair of pants that are too tight, say Zephaniah 3:17 out loud as a reminder that God delights in you.
3. You are a masterpiece – Ephesians 2:10
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
—Ephesians 2:10
Apply it to your weight loss: I spent so much of my life assuming something was wrong with my body. Other people didn’t seem to struggle with food the way I did. Why does my body and brain seem to be drawn to food so much?
Friend, you are not broken. You are not too much. You are God’s creation, intentionally made and still a work in progress. You are worthy of a place at God’s table because God says that place is yours.
4. You are free – Romans 5:1
“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
—Romans 5:1
Apply it to your weight loss: Are you in bondage and chained because of your eating struggles? Food freedom is yours now. Today is the day to claim the victory! Jesus paid the price with his death on the cross.
5. You are wonderfully made – Psalm 139:14
“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.”
—Psalm 139:14
Apply it to your weight loss: When my son was a newborn, I painted this verse on his nursey wall. Each time I saw it, it was a sweet reminder that this little boy was a miracle that God created.
I saw my baby as a marvelous creation from God, but I couldn’t see it for myself. Your body may not look the way you want right now, but it is still a miracle. You were knit together with intention. Care for yourself like someone who matters.
6. You are redeemed – Ephesians 1:7
“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace.”
—Ephesians 1:7
Apply it to your weight loss: There is so much beauty in the Biblical concept of redemption. The price has already been paid for any mistakes or sinful behaviors with food.
Some of my past behaviors included:
- Binge eating
- Buying binge foods with the family’s grocery money
- Dishonesty about how much I ate
- Sneaking food,
- Hiding wrappers
- Stealing food that belonged to others
As much as it would be easy to think shameful thoughts about these situations, I know God’s grace covers them all. God takes these embarrassing, wrong choices I made and redeems them.
7. You are forgiven – Psalm 103:12
“As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.”
—Psalm 103:12
Apply it to your weight loss: With His death on the cross and resurrection, Jesus has paid the price for every sin you’ve committed, and that includes sinful behaviors with food.
Last year I asked my readers what they struggle with the most when it comes to forgivness, and the top answer was forgiving myself. Learning to forgive yourself is an important part of the healing process. Check out the Forgiving Myself, Forgiving Others journal to go deeper with this topic.
8. You are dearly loved – 1 John 4:10
“In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”
—1 John 4:10
Apply it to your weight loss journey: God’s love for you is far deeper, more intense, and more beautiful than you can possibly imagine. Today, rest in the knowledge that you are deeply loved.
9. You are accepted – Romans 8:1
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
—Romans 8:1
Apply it to your weight loss journey: Do you have a voice in your head that says you’ll never be good enough? That’s not from God. Don’t let the enemy gain a foothold. Instead, remind yourself of the truth from Romans 8. You are not condemned.
I’ve been overweight my whole life, and was never one of the popular ones in school or part of the “in” crowd. Yet God accepts me, and that’s what really matters.
10. You are blessed – Romans 8:32
“He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?”
—Romans 8:32
Apply it to your weight loss: After years of internally beating ourselves up, those thoughts and patterns of thinking seem true. They feel normal.
Turn those lies around by focusing on this truth from Romans 8. God loves you as His child, and wants to shower you with blessings.
If you have children or an important child in your life, think of how much fun it is to give them gifts. God feels the same way about giving gifts to you.
11. You are a child of God – Galatians 4:7
“So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.”
—Galatians 4:7
Apply it to your weight loss: Two of our children are adopted, and their adoption days were some of the best in my life. When we stood before the judge to bring them officially into our family, the judge reminded us that these children have the same rights and privileges as a child born to us.
As God’s child, you are part of the family. No food struggle cancels out your place in the kingdom.
12. You are a conqueror – Romans 8:37
“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”
—Romans 8:37
Apply it to your weight loss: In The Holy Mess Weight Loss Membership, sometimes women share that they feel like they are just barely hanging on by a thread. I get it. I completely understand this feeling. During times when the weight loss road feels long, when you feel overwhelmed, and you want to quit, remember that you are a conqueror.
When you feel like you can’t do it one more day, surrender. Let God carry the burden for you. Instead of quitting, turn to God for help. Maybe you can’t do it on your own (I couldn’t). But with God’s power, you can.
Why Christian Identity Changes Everything
A reader favorite weight loss affirmation is “my worth is not my weight.” The number on the scale is one piece of data, but it doesn’t define you.
You are a daughter of the King. You are beautiful.
When you begin to see yourself the way God sees you, everything shifts. You stop chasing perfection, then getting overwhelmed and quitting. You stop the all-or-nothing, on-again-off-again behaviors.
You give yourself God’s grace and compassion. You stop spiraling in guilt and start living in peace.
When you’re feeling overwhelmed about weight loss, stop looking for the next perfect diet, the just-right meal plan or even the weight loss medication or surgery. All of these are necessary tools and strategies, and I’m in favor of them all. But none of them will replace resting in God’s grace.
