Easy & Healthy Mug Cake with Cake Mix
This chocolate cake recipe is a great one to make because it takes just a few minutes to prepare with a couple simple ingredients. Then, the mug cakes take just 1 minute in the microwave and your snack is ready.
My kids love 3-2-1 cakes and enjoy these little treats as much as I do.
Just to give you a heads up, the serving size on these little WW treats is not large. It makes a small cake that is about half the size of a standard coffee mug. Think of this as a way to enjoy a dessert without a lot of extra calories. Enjoy this as a dessert after dinner or pair it with something more substantial if you are truly hungry.
How do you make 3-2-1 cake?
This recipe is so easy to make. Simple combine the following ingredients in a large container or zipper plastic bag:
- 1 box angel food cake mix
- 1 box devils food (or any chocolate) cake mix
- 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (optional, but gives it more of a chocolate brownie flavor)
Then, to make an individual serving you will combine 3 tablespoons of the cake mix, 2 tablespoons of water, and cook for 1 minute in the microwave. (That’s what the 3-2-1 stands for, which makes it easy to remember.)
This cake is made with:
- No eggs
- No oil
- No milk (dairy-free)

How to Make 3-2-1 Chocolate Mug Cake {Easy 1 Minute Recipe}
Here are the step-by-step directions for making this incredible easy 1 minute mug cake.
Step 1: Prepare the Mixture
We added 1/3 cup cocoa powder to the mix to make the mixture more chocolatey, since half the mix is angel food cake. This is optional.
Once your mixture is combined, store in a jar, container with a tight lid, or a gallon zipper bag. Store in a cool, dry place without a lot of moisture. (I keep mine in the pantry.) The mixture makes 28 servings.
This recipe is great for both kids and adults.
Step 2: Make a Mini Cake!
Now you are ready to make your 1 minute individual desserts anytime you want one.
You can bake your microwave cake in a coffee mug, like we did, or a small microwave-safe bowl or ramekin.
I’ve tried this recipe both will spraying the mug with cooking spray and without. The recipe works both ways. Your cake will rise a bit higher if you don’t use cooking spray, but the mug will be a little harder to clean. We typically use this recipe without spraying the mug and haven’t had problems.
Yum! Your cake is ready for you to enjoy eating. Eat plain or topping with some yummy extras like a few chocolate chips, frosting, or whipped topping.

Is it 3 Tablespoons of each cake mix?
Sara says
Hi Toni, First, mix the two cake mixes together. Then, take 3 T of that mixture and make your mug cake. I hope this helps to clarify.

Your recipe sounds so good! I want to make it with sugar free cake mix but have no idea how you worked up all the nutritional information for using regular cake mix. I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me.
Thanks so much,
Susan
Sara says
Hi Susan, the nutritional info is actually not that different for regular and sugar free cake mix. I was surprised! You only save a few calories with the sugar free option. If you have more specific questions, you can email us sara@theholymess.com.
