Who is Jesus?
Jesus is fully God and fully man. Although divine God, He was born into the world as a baby (which we now celebrate every year during Advent and at Christmas.) He lived as a man and was the only person to live without sin. Learn more about Jesus in this post, “Who is Jesus Christ?”
Jesus suffered and died on the cross to pay the penalty for sin. After 3 days, He rose again which we celebrate at Easter. We trust in Jesus as our Savior, a faith we have because of the Holy Spirit at work in our lives.
Being a Christian means trusting Jesus as your Savior and developing a personal relationship with Him.
How to Get to Know Jesus Personally
I was a teen when I was introduced to the concept that there is a difference between knowing of Jesus and being in an intimate relationship with Jesus.
During a church travel team I was on in my teen years, we memorized this passage from John 30,
He must increase, but I must decrease.
John 30:30
I began to understand the impact of allowing Christ to come and fully transform my life on an ongoing basis. Part of that process includes a daily Bible reading plan to learn more about Christ and understand His purpose in your life.
When I decrease and Christ increases, people see Jesus at work in me in big ways and small:
- My husband sees Jesus in me when I ask about his day instead of getting frustrated when he doesn’t ask about mine.
- My children see Jesus in me when I remain calm during their (seemingly endless) squabbles.
- The families I work with as a social worker see Jesus in me as I offer them genuine compassion and support in the midst of their struggles.
- Strangers see Jesus in me when I am gracious if someone cuts me off in traffic or the grocery store line.
- Friends see Jesus in me when I respond with Biblical truth and love to Facebook disputes.
None of these things would be possible through my human efforts. On my own, it gets ugly and unholy – fast. Without Jesus, to be honest my life looks more like this:
- My desires are to demand my husband pay me the attention I think I rightly deserve.
- I want my kids to pipe down and shut up so I can have some peace and quiet at the end of a long hard day.
- I selfishly want to roll my eyes and tell the families I work with to get their act together.
- Left to my own devices, I quickly type snarky come-backs on Facebook.
Friends, as you decrease in your sin and selfish desires, Jesus increases within you.
This is a spiritual, holy process that was started in your baptism and continues each day.
I encourage you to download and use this Knowing Jesus daily Bible reading plan not just know Jesus better, but to actually become more like Jesus.
Isn’t that incredible? The Holy Spirit does this refining work in you and as you grow to become more like Jesus, you become more beautiful.
You become a woman who shines with His light.
Top 5 Bible Verses about Knowing Jesus
Here are 5 verses about getting to know Jesus in a personal way.
1. Colossians 1:9 – Be filled with the knowledge of his will.
And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding.
Colossians 1:9
Often Christians will say, “If only I knew what God’s will was for my life. What decision should I make?” The truth is that the more we develop a relationship with Jesus, and the more we study God’s Word, the more you will understand His will and purpose for your life. This is how you develop spiritual maturity and Godly wisdom.
God does not hide His will from you. The question is, will you follow it?
2. John 17:3 – This is eternal life.
And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
John 17:3
The Bible is clear that we receive eternal life by trust in Jesus as our Savior. While it’s a nice thought that all roads lead to God, it’s not the truth. There is only one way to salvation and that is through Christ alone.
3. Galatians 4:8-9 – To be known by God.
Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods. But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more?
Galatians 4:8-9, ESV
Before you were a Christian, you were a slave to sin. Now that you know God, and God knows you as His child, you have freedom in Christ. Do not turn back to the ways of the world, as tempting as it may be at times. What the world has to offer you will come up empty and only lead to continued bondage.
4. Ephesians 1:17 – Receive a spirit of wisdom.
…that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him,
Ephesians 1:17
As you grow in faith, God develops fruits of the spirit within you. These are not things you earn, they are gifts of the Holy Spirit. You will receive wisdom and revelation as you grow and mature in Christ.
5. Ephesians 3:19 – To know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge.
and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Ephesians 3:19
God’s love is deeper, wider, and stronger than any earthly relationship. When you grow closer to Jesus, that love pours out of you and shines for all to see. Your relationships become more peaceful and loving. You have joy and peace unlike what you’ve ever experienced.
